A TRIBUTE TO DR. JAGDISH GANDHI BY FORMER PRESIDENT KGALEMA MOTLANTHE 14 JANUARY 2025

Dr. Jagdish Gandhi’s life has been a true testament to the values of knowledge and to the principles of peace and compassion. As the Founder-Manager of City Montessori School and Founder Convener of the International Conference of Chief Justices of the World, his boundless energy and dedication to the cause of life-long education as well as world peace, touched countless lives, including my wife, Gugu and I. We remember him with cherished memories of his caring and generous nature.

For us, what often stood out most about Dr. Gandhi was his unique ability to connect with people on a cerebral level and through the heart. His warm, personable demeanour made every interaction feel meaningful. I fondly recall several instances how the good Doctor would weave through the crowds, engaging in both formal and casual dialogue with everyone and with equal fervour, from dignitaries to young children. His passion for the protection of children, informed his plea to world leaders to further persuade the United Nations to prioritise peace and the rights of children.

Dr. Gandhi’s remarkable ability to organise live simulations of the United Nations General Assembly provided school pupils with an unparalleled immersive experience, allowing them to represent nations from across the globe in the spirit of human rights, particularly children’s rights. Dr. Gandhi drew the participation of former Heads of State and Chief Justices, and we observed the reenactments of international diplomacy and bilateral relations by the young ambassadors. Following the simulations, we engaged in interactive discussions with the students, fostering deeper dialogue on the subject matter. It was a profoundly impactful educational experience that resonated with participants of all ages, bridging generational divides.

Dr. Gandhi’s genuine curiosity about other people and their individual perspectives, no matter where they came from, gleamed through as a distinct virtue of his strong character and often came with a reassuring pat on the shoulder or a heartfelt laugh.

This approachable personality, combined with his profound intellect, made Dr. Gandhi a beloved leader who was able to bring together many minds and ideas from diverse walks of life. He made us all feel valued and heard.

May Dr. Gandhi’s legacy live on in the institutions he founded and in the many lessons and networks that we are all beneficiaries of.
